Put it on your calendar in Pen!
Jed Olson of HPT trails has been kind enough to help put together one last fiesta for this season. On October 18th there will be a Super-D in La Crosse Wisconsin. My understanding is that it will include features that appeal to both the downhill crowd and the endurance crowd. This race will be similar to the design of the recent Afton Super-D, only this race will be twice as long.
If you haven’t been down to check out the HPT trails or dirt jumps, this is an excellent opportunity!

Tonight we met with the Maple Plain city council and they approved the BMX Dirt Jump Park after our presentation on the jumps and the pump track and how we plan to build and maintain them.
There is a lot of work to be done yet. But the key here is that the City Council gave us and the Maple Plain Park Commission permisson to move forward with the plans. We have to find some contractors to move the dirt from it’s current location to the new location. A few of the members of the city council plan on making calls to get that done. Once that is done, we can set up a weekend to build the BMX Dirt jumps.
This is an exciting time for BMX in the west suburbs. We will have our first official dirt jump park. No more need to illegally build……..we are approved and ready to build a facility that will be for all skill levels from beginner riders to experts.
These are the plans for the Dirt Jump Park that we presented to the city. This will be one awesome set of jumps with a fun beginner line, an intermediate line with transfer options, and an advanced line with 6′ high tables for some serious air!
We will announce the build dates as soon as we know them. Thanks to all of the efforts by our crew for getting this organized and approved!

We are less then two weeks away from the 4th and final Jolly Roger race of the season, and there is a lot to be excited about! We are expecting a good turnout for this race with some of the fastest riders in the Midwest coming out to play.
Our sponsors have come through huge and we have lots of swag to give away for the end of the series as well as the pre-registration raffle for a new Dirt Jump Frame and other cool prizes. As a refresher, everytime you pre-registered for a race this year you were entered into an end of the year raffle. You can still preregister for the last race of the season if you want your name to be in the mix.
Recent group rides out at Memorial Park comfirm that the trails are in good shape and just begging to be raced on. This race will consist of one run on each course with the riders’ combined time determining how they place.
Registration and preride will begin at 9:00am on the 19th and the race will start at 12:00pm.

This year we have had a growing Junior class which is awesome. If you are under 18 and would like to race, you need to either arrive with a USA Cycling waiver signed by your legal guardian or they must be present at registration to sign. The last thing we want to do is turn riders away because they don’t have a properly signed waiver.
See you out there!

As some of you may know, there was a Super-D race at Afton this last weekend, as part of the 72-Hours of Afton Festival. This was not a textbook Super-D race as the course contained several DH features. I’m also proud to say that I saw more full-helmets and pads than spandex.
The winner of the Super-D was Thor Shellum with a time of 2:24.56. There were other fast riders and several that might have done even better had they not just finished the 24hr race; but at the end of the day no one could come within 8 seconds of Thor’s time.
We’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making this race possible. That includes all the LCR and MFC riders that helped build the course as well as the main sponsors: Salsa, Nightrider, and Fair Exchange Coffee.
Most of all, a big thanks goes out to Afton and John Rentz for working with us to allow a progressive course that will hopefully help lay the ground work for future events.
Results and photos will be posted soon!

Corie Berrigan, the race director of the 24 hours of Afton, has added a Super-D to the race weekend this year. She asked me to help put the course together and I definitely added enough DH flavor to keep the fast XC guys on their toes. Try and make it out if you can. It should be a fun time and it might mean the start of something bigger for us at Afton.
The course has been designed and assembled by a group of both XC and DH riders to be an equalizer. There are several jumps and other technical features which will yield a time penalty by the nature of course routing if avoided. On the flipside, it is a super-d and there is a few up hill spots that will give big bikes a run for their money. If you’re trying to decide which bike to run, aim for something that does it all pretty well and avoids excelling in just one area.
As someone who has raced a good deal of both XC and DH, I am excited to say that I have no idea who is going to win this race. It’ll either be a XC style that can send it over the big stuff or a DH style that can pedal hard when it matters. Either way, it’s gonna be a party!

This past weekend I was swingin’ through Madison area doin’ some work, long story short I was able to stop by lend a hand, and check it out. Check the photos. Its only going to get better as the pump track rides in! Huge props to the build crew, its super fun to ride! Look for some kind of BBQ/G.O. in late fall to celebrate the completion is what I am hearin’!

A line of jump that comes off the wood ramp section and wraps to the left a round a rad little hip/berm combo! Super fun!

If you’re wondering where Stoughton is, you’re not the only one! I saw this post over on Capital Off Road Pathfinders out of Madison! Its a town about 20 miles south of Madison, looks they are in need of some help to finish up a Dirt Jump park! If you’re from the area go check it out! To toss some dirt contact Brian at baldis44@yahoo.com
————————————————————————————————–
Mongoose Bikes, Schaefer Tracks and the City of Stoughton,WI have teamed up to build an all inclusive bike park to serve the greater Madsion, WI area. Located on the south side of Stoughton in an area called the Mel Bakke Bike Park the facility has been 3 years in the making. Originally the City had allocated the land for bikes because BMX riders were riding the local skateboard park. The first portion of construction began in 2007 and involved pouring a concrete slab and building a series of wood ramps. Adjacent to the ramps sat roughly 2 acres of open dirt area which was never developed until recently when Mongoose and Schaefer Tracks teamed up to aid the City in the building of proper dirt jumps, a pump track and a skills park using 400+ cubic yards of dirt. The bike park is not fully completed, but well underway and should be done this summer. The design is meant to have something for BMX and MTB at all skill levels making it a true bike park and not just a BMX park.
The City of Stoughton has run out of funding for the bike park and all the work provided by Mongoose Bikes and Schaefer Tracks was pro-bono with the aid of local volunteers. Much more is needed to make the bike park the best it can be as well as maintain it into the future. Anyone interested in making a contribution of money or materials should contact Brian Baldis at baldis44@yahoo.com. More work dates will be arranged in the near future to complete the pump track and skills area. Signs will posted on the park gate with work dates and times as well as on the bike park portion of the City of Stoughton web page. Directions from Madison: Take 51 south off the Beltline to Stoughton. Turn right on Page st. Go a couple blocks and look for a park on the right after a 4 way stop.
